This piece combines generalizations made by settlers about Native Americans between the early 1800s and present. During the colonization of the Americas, prior to reaching the Pacific Northwest, settlers believed Native Americans were rich in gold silver and bronze. To reflect this belief I handcrafted ceramic beads and glazed them silver to symbolize this prejudgment. Similarly, contemporary settlers efface indigenous tribes with varied languages, cultures, and customs by presuming they all share a set of stereotypical features: to symbolize this, I wove the gold and silver beads into a dreamcatcher. (Many people who don't know the differences between different tribes associate Native Americans with dreamcatchers, though they were only used in a couple of tribes who lived on the northern border of the United States and Canada.)
