This piece is based on a myth told by the Chinook tribe on the Oregon coast. When settlers first arrived in Oregon by ship Native Americans had never seen a boat like theirs, and described it as a whale with a tree growing out of it. In this piece, I hand built an abstraction of their description using low fire clay. It received a Scholastic Honorable Mention Award.
